One of our founding principals is to protect and preserve habitat and wildlife. NCMV is in the process of raising funds and recruiting teams of volunteers who will build and maintain osprey nesting platforms and monitor osprey nests locally during breeding season.
Ospreys in Trumbull County are increasingly nesting on utility poles, where they risk electrocution, nest fires, and death. By installing dedicated nesting platforms, we can provide safe homes for these remarkable birds while protecting utility infrastructure and reducing costly outages. Your investment and volunteer support will help save wildlife, improve nesting success, and create a lasting conservation legacy for our community.
Help us with the Osprey Project! If you know where existing nests are in Trumbull County, please fill out a short form to help us to determine where to put platforms. Use this link or the link in the green heading above this paragraph. Complete a form for each nest.
This is an example of an osprey platform that can be used to prevent electrocution and fire. One platform can mean the difference between a nest built on a dangerous utility pole and a safe place where an osprey family can successfully raise its young.
Ospreys are highly faithful to nesting locations and frequently return to the same site year after year. Across North America, utilities and wildlife agencies have found that the most successful approach is often to address problem nests during the non-nesting season, before eggs are laid and chicks are present. This allows nests to be removed safely and replacement nesting platforms to be installed nearby, giving the birds a safe alternative before they begin breeding.
It is important to identify problem nests early, install nesting platforms, and create partnerships among utilities, wildlife agencies, conservation groups, and the community.
The goal is not to choose between reliable electric service and osprey conservation. The goal is to achieve both.
Together, we can turn a preventable tragedy into a conservation success story!
